Rubrics
The Tools for Cultural Proficiency are designed to guide individuals and organizations to examine their values and behaviors based on their beliefs and assumptions about how students learn and who can learn. This inside-out approach for changing behaviors and environments is the central work of culturally proficient educators. Once an organization’s members examine who they are and for whose purpose they exist, they have a greater chance of developing skills and capabilities to address the behaviors and environments within the organization. When a professional learning program is consistent with the organization’s identity/vision and beliefs, educators share the responsibility of developing resources and actions in support of those agreed upon components.
One way to move individuals and organizations forward is to develop a Culturally Proficient Action Plan. The plan is based on actions described in the following Rubrics. All 4 Tools are demonstrated in the Rubric. These Rubrics were developed to assess a school’s or district’s healthy/unhealthy and productive/unproductive values, language, and behaviors placed along the Continuum.
- Remember from the discussion of the 4 Tools, the first vertical column of cells on the left describes the ‘essence’ of each of the Essential Elements, the action steps.
- As you will see in the descriptions that follow, the Essential Elements are fully operationalized at the Cultural Competence level on the Rubrics.
- Once you have examined the first column you are prepared to read across the rows of Essential Elements.
- The three cells on the left (negative side of the Continuum) are informed by the Barriers, and
- The three cells on the right (positive side of the Continuum) are informed by the Guiding Principles.
